ABOUT

Hi! My name is Ella McDaid. I am a current MA in Film student at Queen's University Belfast. I live beside the sea in rural Co.Donegal where I sat my Leaving Certificate in 2016 and then progressed into BSc (Hons) Cinematic Arts in Ulster University in Northern Ireland. Along with film, I have a keen interest in Art, History, Photography and Gardening.

My passion for film originally came about because I wanted to make people happy. My favourite film of all time is Mary Poppins. Seeing a film I love brings a wonderful sense of joy to me and I wanted to spread that joy to others. As I progressed through my course, I started to develop an interest in producing for film. I gained my first producer credit on a short horror called Blood Debt in Easter 2018 and I felt a natural click.

That led me to creating Black Treacle Films in July 2018. The name for my production company came about because of my late grandmother Sadie's black treacle scones. They were rich, bitter and a little sweet just like how I wanted my films to be. In 2019, I worked on a number of different projects including a short documentary exploring the genetic effect of the Irish potato famine on the Irish population and a short documentary on the healing power of art in a domestic abuse therapy group in partnership with Ulster University and Foyle Women's Aid.

In 2020, I started exploring screenwriting and gaining a strong academic foothold in theory of film. I also acted as a producer for a short experimental horror called My Morning Routine. My directorial debut is scheduled for early next year focusing on the genre of psychological horror. If you're interested in working with me or hiring me please feel free to contact me via the menu bar. Thanks for reading!
